What We Learned From One Year of Consistent Podcasting

One year ago, we hit record on Behind the Brand without having everything figured out. There was no perfectly mapped-out strategy or polished content plan. What we had was a strong idea, a trusted producer, and a goal to start more conversations with business owners and leaders in our community. At the same time, we wanted to create a space where we could talk about what we do best, building bold brands.

A year later, the podcast has become one of our favorite marketing tools, but not because of overnight success or viral moments. It has become valuable because of what it has built over time. It has helped us stay consistent, strengthen relationships, and create content that continues working long after each episode is recorded. Most importantly, it has shaped how we think about marketing, leadership, and the role conversations play in growing a business.

Consistency Is What Moves the Needle

If there is one lesson that stands out, it is that consistency matters more than perfection. There were plenty of weeks where we were figuring out topics at the last minute or pulling ideas together the day before recording. Some episodes felt effortless, while others felt a little clunky. But we kept showing up.

It would have been easy to push the podcast aside when things got busy. Like most business owners, we are balancing client work, internal projects, and everything in between. Creating something for ourselves can quickly fall to the bottom of the list. Still, we made the decision to treat the podcast as a priority, even when it was not convenient.

That consistency is what allowed the podcast to grow. Not every episode needed to be perfect. Not every conversation needed to be groundbreaking. What mattered was building a habit of showing up and continuing to create. Over time, that repetition made everything feel more natural. Conversations flowed better, hosting became easier, and the pressure to get everything “just right” started to fade.

You Figure It Out By Doing

One of the biggest barriers at the beginning was simply not knowing what to expect. There was a lot of hesitation around what we would talk about and whether we had enough to say. That kind of uncertainty is something we see often, especially with businesses considering new marketing efforts.

The reality is, clarity comes from action. The first few episodes are never going to feel perfect. There will be moments where you overthink your questions or feel like you are talking too much. But those moments are part of the process. They are what help you refine your approach and improve over time.

Looking back, there has been a clear evolution in how we show up behind the mic. What once felt uncomfortable has become second nature. That growth would not have happened without committing to the process and being willing to learn as we went.

Podcasting Builds More Than Content

When we first started, the goal was simple. We wanted to create more content, support our website with SEO, and position ourselves as a trusted voice in our industry. The podcast has done all of those things, but it has also delivered value in ways we did not fully anticipate.

Each episode contributes to a growing library of content that lives on our website and helps people find us. It supports our overall marketing strategy by giving us something consistent to share and build from. It also gives potential clients a way to hear how we think, how we communicate, and how we approach our work before ever reaching out.

At the same time, the podcast has become a relationship-building tool. Featuring clients and other business owners gives them a platform to share their story while allowing us to connect with them on a deeper level. Those conversations go beyond project work and create a stronger sense of partnership. When guests share their episodes, it also introduces new audiences to Moxie and what we do.

Personality Is Part of the Strategy

One thing that is difficult to fully capture on a website is personality. You can explain your services and showcase your work, but it is harder to communicate how you actually operate as a team. The podcast fills that gap.

It gives people a chance to hear real conversations, understand how we think, and get a feel for what it would be like to work with us. That kind of transparency builds trust in a way that written content alone cannot always achieve. It reinforces that we are approachable, down-to-earth, and focused on creating meaningful relationships with our clients.

Over time, we have also seen the podcast evolve beyond just client conversations. What started as a way to highlight our work has grown into a broader platform for small business discussions. Bringing on vendors, community members, and other business owners has added new perspectives and made the conversations more dynamic. Every business owner is a marketer in some way, and those insights have become an important part of what the podcast offers.

What We’re Taking Into Year Two

As we move into the next year, the focus is on building on what is already working. We want to continue connecting with more people in our community, expanding the range of guests, and finding new ways to repurpose and share the content we are creating. There is also an opportunity to better organize and distribute each episode so it reaches more people across more platforms.

Beyond strategy, the podcast has also created growth within our team. Showing up behind the mic, even when it feels uncomfortable, builds confidence over time. That confidence carries into client conversations, networking, and everyday communication. It is a reminder that putting yourself out there consistently will always lead to growth, even if it feels uncertain at first.

The biggest takeaway from the past year is simple. You do not need to have everything figured out to start something meaningful. You just need to begin and keep going.
