What happens when a heritage brand that’s been “aging beautifully” for generations decides it’s time for a modern refresh? On this episode of Behind the Brand, Moxie Creative sat down with Calen Kirkland, Sales Director at The Barrel Mill, to talk about honoring legacy, embracing innovation, and taking a family-owned cooperage into the digital age.
The Barrel Mill, based in Avon, Minnesota, is known around the world for crafting high-quality oak barrels used by distilleries, breweries, and winemakers. But as Calen and the team have proven, their story goes far beyond barrels. It’s about craftsmanship, experimentation, and a willingness to rethink what’s possible for a legacy business.
From Bourbon Roots to Barrel Mill Leadership
Calen’s path to The Barrel Mill started long before he joined the team.
He grew up a proud Kentuckian, with a dad who worked as a forester and at a sawmill—someone who loved trees, wood, and the outdoors. Add in Calen’s own love of bourbon, and you can see why stepping into a cooperage felt like a full-circle moment.
After college, he cut his teeth in a Fortune 500 sales management trainee program, then moved into smaller companies where he discovered he preferred the agility and impact of a leaner team. When the opportunity to join The Barrel Mill came up, it blended everything he cared about:
- A product rooted in tradition
- A family-owned culture
- A chance to build and lead a sales and marketing team
Three years later, Calen now oversees sales and marketing, helping steer The Barrel Mill through one of its biggest evolutions yet.
Inside a Modern Cooperage: Craft First, Always
If you picture The Barrel Mill as a big, faceless factory, think again.
Every barrel is handcrafted in Avon, with wood sourced from their own sawmill about an hour north in Eagle Bend, Minnesota. From start to finish, a single barrel takes around 45 minutes to build—an incredible amount of time when you realize how much of it is hands-on.
A few details that stood out during Moxie’s on-site visit:
- Skilled craftspeople with serious tenure – Many members of the production team have been with the company for 10+ years. They know each position on the line and work together like clockwork.
- True attention to detail – Watching a cooper “raise a barrel” almost feels like watching someone play a high-stakes game of Tetris. Each stave is carefully selected and positioned so the fit, seal, and final structure are perfect.
- Real fire, real craftsmanship – Toasting and charring are done with actual flame, not a shortcut. Every decision impacts the final flavor a distiller will pull from that barrel.
This is the heart of what makes The Barrel Mill a heritage brand: real people, real skills, and a relentless standard for quality.
When a Heritage Brand Asks, “What’s Next?”
When Moxie Creative first met Calen, it was literally day one.
He had just started at The Barrel Mill when Jordan and Sony walked him into a meeting and said, “This is who we’re working with. We’re going to rebrand the company you just joined.”
Instead of hesitating, Calen said, “Here we go. Let’s do it.”
From there, the partnership between The Barrel Mill and Moxie unfolded in stages:
- Brand refresh – Honoring the company’s roots while tightening up visuals and messaging so everything felt cohesive, modern, and scalable.
- New website – A digital home that actually matched the quality of the product and made it easier for customers to learn, inquire, and connect.
- E-commerce launch – In 2025, The Barrel Mill took its products online for the first time, opening doors to home users, hobbyists, and smaller buyers who previously couldn’t access their offerings as easily.
- Ongoing marketing support – Email marketing, social media, content, and strategy to amplify the story Calen and his team are living every day.
Calen admits that, like many family-owned businesses, The Barrel Mill once operated with a more “small and scrappy” mindset. A big part of his work has been helping the company step into a wider vision: still family-owned, but thinking and acting like a global brand.
Infusion Spirals: Innovation in a Legacy Industry
One of the most exciting chapters in The Barrel Mill’s story is the Infusion Spiral—their proprietary oak alternative that’s turning heads across the industry.
The Infusion Spiral was developed as a way to expose liquid to multiple cuts of grain and surface area at once. Each spiral has:
- End grain
- Cross grain
- Surface grain
That design means more complexity and faster extraction, allowing distillers, brewers, wineries, and even home enthusiasts to experiment with flavor in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional aging.
There are spirals in multiple species and toast levels, and The Barrel Mill is constantly expanding the line—recently tapping into Mizunara, a highly sought-after Japanese oak that’s especially beloved in the whiskey world.
And the applications? Almost endless:
- Craft distillers looking for unique finishing options
- Brewers and winemakers wanting more control over flavor
- Home users playing with bottle spirals in their favorite tequila, bourbon, or wine
- Brands in the fast-growing NA (non-alcoholic) beverage space, who want that “barrel-aged” complexity without the barrels
As Isabella shared on the podcast, even a $30 bottle of tequila transformed into a smooth, sippable drink after two weeks with a spiral. That kind of hands-on experimentation is what makes this product such a powerful bridge between heritage craft and modern consumer curiosity.
Going Digital: E-Commerce, New Markets, and the NA Wave
The e-commerce launch has been a game-changer.
Calen shared that if you’d told him a year ago what their online shop would be doing now, he wouldn’t have believed it. Customers are discovering The Barrel Mill online—ordering spirals, decor, display pieces, and more—often in places the team hasn’t even actively targeted yet.
A few growth areas on the horizon:
- New species & skews – More woods, more toast levels, and more ways to create layered, complex flavors.
- New markets – From major distilleries looking to mimic specific barrel profiles to small-town whiskey clubs hosting “Sunday sippers.”
- Non-alcoholic beverages – NA brands are looking for ways to capture barrel-aged flavor without traditional aging, and spirals are a natural fit.
- Retail and décor – Barrel heads, display pieces, and one-of-a-kind items that bring the heritage of coopering into homes, tasting rooms, and retail spaces.
Through it all, Calen’s focus has stayed consistent: keep the team busy, keep quality high, and keep exploring new ways to serve both legacy partners and first-time customers.
Lessons for Heritage Brands Ready to Evolve
So what can other small businesses and heritage brands learn from The Barrel Mill’s modern evolution? Calen shared a few key insights on the pod:
- Don’t be afraid to try something new. Whether it’s a brand refresh, an e-commerce launch, or a new product line, you won’t know what’s possible until you take the leap.
- You can always adjust. If something doesn’t work, you can step back, learn from it, and refine your approach. But you won’t grow by standing still.
- Honor your roots, but don’t let them box you in. The Barrel Mill is still a family-owned cooperage at its core—but that hasn’t stopped them from innovating with spirals, global partnerships, and digital expansion.
- Build processes that support growth. From weekly sales meetings to one-on-ones with reps in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Napa, Calen focuses on communication, alignment, and shared strategy.
As he put it, stepping out of your comfort zone is how he lives his personal life—so it only makes sense to lead the business the same way.
