Work-Life Balance for Creatives: Real Talk from Business Owners and Employees

Let’s face it. “Work-life balance” feels like one of those buzzwords that’s easier to talk about than actually achieve. But at Moxie Creative, we believe it’s not just a trending topic. It’s a real conversation worth having.

In a recent episode of our podcast Behind the Brand, co-hosts Taylor, Kelly, and Isabella sat down to talk candidly about what balance (or blend) looks like across three different life stages.

From managing toddler chaos and client meetings to navigating Gen Z burnout and empty-nester entrepreneurship, this episode covers the real-life highs and lows of finding your rhythm as a creative professional.

Do You Believe in Work-Life Balance?

The conversation kicked off with a question many of us wrestle with: Does work-life balance actually exist?

Isabella, Moxie’s 22-year-old social media manager, shared that while she believes in the concept, she’s still trying to figure it out for herself. With a role that includes everything from photography and video editing to copywriting and brand strategy, she admits her brain rarely shuts off. Even her hobbies—like content creation—often blur into work.

“I don’t go to bed until like 2 a.m. most nights,” she said. “I’m always thinking about ideas.”

That constant mental load can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to prove yourself early in your career. Isabella’s go-to solution? Taking her phone out of the equation and spending time outside, writing in a notebook, or unplugging from screens completely. Small moments of solitude give her space to process everything she’s juggling.

From Balance to Blend

Taylor, Moxie’s marketing strategist and a mom of two young children, offered another take: maybe balance isn’t always the goal.

“I like to call it work-life blend,” she said. “Right now, with toddlers at home, things are never fully balanced. But I’ve found ways to blend work and life in a way that works for me.”

Instead of keeping work and home life in two separate boxes, Taylor gives herself flexibility to adjust in real-time. That might mean answering a few emails during nap time, or taking a break during the workday to handle a daycare emergency. The key, she said, is being intentional about when and how she’s switching between roles.

And thanks to Moxie’s flexible culture, Taylor feels supported—not judged—for needing that kind of fluidity.

The Employer’s Perspective: Boundaries, Planning, and Grace

As Moxie’s founder, Kelly brought the perspective of someone who’s experienced every stage of work-life juggling. She raised kids while building a career and now, as an empty nester and business owner, she still feels the demands of running a business that supports six other people.

Her solution? Planning and time blocking.

“I plan my day like it’s a schedule full of meetings—even if it’s just solo work time,” she explained. “That way I know exactly what I’m supposed to be focused on and when.”

Kelly also makes a point to unplug when she needs to, especially on weekends. After years of letting work creep into every hour of her life, she’s learned to recognize when she’s reaching burnout. She’s also intentional about giving her team the space to disconnect, reminding them that rest is part of being productive—not separate from it.

The Culture at Moxie: Built for Balance

Throughout the episode, it was clear that Moxie’s culture plays a big role in how the team navigates work-life harmony. There’s a strong foundation of trust and transparency. No one is micromanaged. No one is expected to be online 24/7. And when life gets messy (as it often does), there’s an understanding that people will step up to cover each other.

The team works hard, but they also know when to log off. They’re encouraged to take time off, attend family events, or work from home when needed. There’s also an unspoken rule: if a client really needs something urgently, they’ll reach out—and someone on the team will make sure it’s handled. But those moments are rare because boundaries have been built from day one.

Real Tips from Real People

As the episode unfolded, several helpful tactics came up. These weren’t just productivity hacks—they were thoughtful ways to create a sustainable routine as a creative.

  1. Set clear boundaries.
Taylor deletes her email app from her phone every Friday afternoon. Isabella stopped receiving push notifications. Kelly avoids checking work emails at night so she can sleep better.
  2. Time block your day.
Kelly’s calendar is full of “meetings” that are really just blocks for focused work time. She adjusts her schedule as needed, but always knows what’s most important.
  3. Know when to shut it down.
Taylor has a hard cut-off time at night—usually around 10:30 p.m.—so she can get enough rest. Kelly takes naps when she’s feeling burnt out. Isabella steps away to journal when her mind feels overloaded.
  4. Let your hobbies stay hobbies.
Creative work can be fulfilling, but when it mirrors your hobbies too closely, burnout can sneak in. Isabella tries to balance screen-heavy tasks with analog activities like writing or photography.
  5. Give yourself and others grace.
Some weeks are harder than others. Some seasons of life are busier than others. Moxie’s team recognizes that balance isn’t a perfect equation—it’s something you build over time.

So... Is Balance Real?

Maybe the better question is: What does balance look like for you, right now? Because the truth is, it changes. What works for a 22-year-old content creator will look different from what works for a mom of two or a business owner with a packed schedule. But everyone deserves the space to figure it out—and a team that supports them while they do.

At Moxie, we’re learning to be flexible with ourselves and with each other. We’re blending personal priorities with professional goals. We’re planning ahead so we can be fully present when it matters most. And we’re committed to building a work culture where thriving creatively doesn’t mean sacrificing everything else.
